Headlining one of the biggest events in Baltimore’s electronic music scene, DJ Z-Trip took Spring Massive to another level of insanity on March 12th. The array of musical genres he played, his transitions from song to song, and the overlaying of different tracks that seemed to magically meld into one, took the Massive audience to an extreme musical high. Though he is considered one of the best live performance DJs in history, it was only this spring that I got to experience his talent. His 2002 album, Uneasy Listening, was his first to garner critical acclaim. He received national attention when the album appeared on the lists of major magazines like Rolling Stone and Wired. Since then he has hit Coachella four times and was voted “America’s Best DJ” in 2009 in DJ Times’ reader poll. His fan appreciation stems strongly from his work in mash-ups. Many consider him the originator of the genre. But his talent does not limit him to the title of DJ, for he has mastered many producer feats along his career path. In 2009, he supplied mixes for the DJ Hero video game and sold over 50,000 copies of his album Victory Lap. This LA based artist has made major impacts on the world of music, some of which I experienced at Bourbon Street night club in Baltimore for Steez Promo’s Spring Massive. If you are not familiar, become familiar, because it is artists like this that changes the music world for the better.
