The 2012 Olympic games in the U.K. are just around the corner which means billions of people will be submitted to another lame opening ceremony that pays tribute to world equality with a parade of rainbow children at the feet of Beyonce, Christina Aguilera or some other hyped up talent. Right? Not so fast... News is that Electronic music has taken yet another giant step in 2011 when pioneering 90's group Underworld were appointed as musical directors for the 3 hour show. The Artistic Director of the event is none other than Academy Award winning director Danny Boyle (Slum Dog Millionaire, 27 Days) who single handedly appointed his long time collaborators to the position. Their partnership dates back 15 years when the 90s seminal Rave fav "Born Slippy" was the closing musical number to Boyle's breakout feature Trainspotting and has continued on a larger scale ever since. Notably, Underworld (Rick Smith & Karl Hyde) co-scored Boyle's sci-fi film Sunshine in 2007 and provided an all original score for the U.K. stage production, Frankenstein, earlier this year.

On the decision to appoint the duo, Boyle had this to say, "Appointing Underworld to direct the music in the Olympic Opening Ceremony is the final piece of the jigsaw for the team of leading British creatives who will deliver the ceremonies.
