To say radio in the United States is homogenized is an understatement, even with the addition of satellite stations we are still bombarded by unimaginative linear programming. Despite the desire by every world pop star to crossover in America it has also been a mandatory exodus for all American musical artists, producers & DJ's to head to Europe to gain the fame and praise they deserve. Luckily for DJ's, especially those of the electronic genre (house, electro, progressive, break beat, etc.) there is the BBC radio network in London, UK. Since 1993, BBC Radio 1 has aired it's seminal "Essential Mix" program on Friday nights/Saturday mornings (typically from 3am-5am) offering up an exclusive 2 hour mix by one of the worlds leading electronic DJs. Hosted and sometimes mixed by Pete Tong since it's inception, "Essential Mix" has had all the top talent from Paul Oakenfold, Frankie Knuckles, David Holmes, Carl Cox...the list goes on and on.
